Why?

the bottom line...
 
there are a billion posts on ubuntuforums.org of people simply stating "just use xforcevesa" to install.
 
it just doesn't work on certain mini-note models.
 
some people appreciate the GUI installation.

Info on HP 2133

hp 2133 mini-note (kx870at)

  • (3/17/09 fixed and updated link)

  • i created this specifically for the HP Mini-Note 2133 (KX870AT#ABA)
    • KX870AT is a US model, this ISO may not work on any other mini-note models
      • KX870AT has very different hardware compared to other mini-notes
    • i've found many people succeed installing ubuntu 8.10 with other mini-notes
      • i've found few succeed installing v8.10 on model KX870AT mini-note
      • i use this distro... so i'm serious about keeping it real.
     
  • this iso is the standard ubuntu intrepid ibex iso
    • this is not the alternate iso 
  • vga external port works (VIA)
  • wireless tested successfully with Broadcom STA wireless Driver
      • click on: System / Administration / Hardware Drivers

  • this is a 99.99% clean distro.
    • i just couln't get x to boot the live cd into the GUI
    • no worries, though. the 5 steps to install are a cinch

Installation Instructions
  • highlight 'install', hit F6 and type xforcevesa
    • X will fail to lauch, but you get a $ prompt
  • type: sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf.kx870at /etc/X11/xorg.conf
  • type: startx
  • click on 'Don't Reload', ignore balloon: 'Crash Report Detected'
  • double click on install icon

  • from this point on it's all very normal :)

Comment   I thought this was my salvation but sadly not. I can report my model of mini-note - KX872AA#ABU will not respond to the instructions. Fails to get $ prompt and ends in a fireword display of pretty blocks, then a dark screen. Running F-05 BIOS, Ubuntu 8.10 CD.

Comment   I managed to successfully use this ISO to install Ubuntu 8.10 on a MiniNote with the model number KX869AT, one number off from yours. The iso from Ubuntu itself would NOT boot on this mini-note, no matter what I tried but the one here worked like a charm. Only one thing: Could you coach me through installing VIA driver drm-via_chrome9-2.6.27-85a-44411-src on the mini-note? It's source code but it's the only STABLE version of the Chrome9 driver available for Intrepid.
